Chartered Institute of Housing in Northern Ireland

Housing professionals in Northern Ireland continue to push the boundaries and go the extra mile – this was the message that emerged as the Chartered Institute of Housing celebrated success in the sector at its Annual Housing Awards held in the Culloden Hotel, Belfast on the 24th February 2011.

The aim of the CIH Housing Awards is to recognise innovation, commitment and achievement across the housing sector in Northern Ireland.

A new look for an old friend……

The Minister meets Mersey SideHousing Minister Margaret Ritchie, Kevin Butler, Chairman Connswater Homes & Jacqueline Locke Chief Executive Connswater Homes, at the launch of the refurbishment scheme at Mersey St Primary School on 13 May 2010.

Take a good look………This is the last time Mersey St Primary School will look like this.

When the hoarding comes down it will be transformed into 28 x 2 bedroom apartments & 2 x 1 bedroom apartments
The conversion of any existing school building would be a difficult and complex one under normal circumstances, the conversion of this building is made more difficult and challenging as the entire site is grade B listed and located in one of the development control zones in relation to the George Best Belfast City Airport.

The Association and its design team liaised with the Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA—Historic Buildings) and the Ulster ArchitecturalThe old school Heritage Society to develop a sensitive design solution that resulted in minimal intervention to the historic character and fabric ensuring that all the main elevations remained intact.

This listed building will be turned into 28 x 2bedroom 3person apartments and 2 x 1bedroom 2person apartments.  The unique aspects of the project allow most of the old classrooms to be directly converted into apartments; this proposal provides maximum density on the site which couldn’t have been achieved without agreement between NIEA Historic Buildings to develop into the existing roof space of the building which allows the apartment bedrooms to be located in a mezzanine level which fronts into the internal courtyard thus allowing the original façade to be retained.

Given the nature of the building many of the original features will be retained including the original façade and the assembly hall.
